![]() Those taxes fund critical highways and public transportation, through the Highway Trust Fund. Right now, the federal government charges an 18 cent tax per gallon of gasoline and a 24 cent tax per gallon of diesel. ![]() And he is calling on states to take similar action to provide some direct relief, whether suspending their own gas taxes or helping consumers in other ways. Specifically, he is calling on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for three months, through September, without taking any money away from the Highway Trust Fund. Today, he is calling on Congress and states to take additional legislative action to provide direct relief to American consumers who have been hit with Putin’s Price Hike. That’s why he has taken action in recent months to boost the supply of oil and gas, including an historic release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and encouraging oil companies and refiners to boost capacity and output to get more supply on the market. President Biden understands that high gas prices pose a significant challenge for working families. The price of gas is up dramatically around the world, and by almost $2 per gallon in America, since Putin began amassing troops on the border of Ukraine. Outside of ERCOT, prices in SPP were in the $3,000/MWh range because of high gas prices.īeing that SPP is mainly regulated and the power companies own the generation, they should have had some hedge against this. The issue with this is that someone has to pay the bills at the end of the day and it is always load. The counter point being that if you could generate you were making a lot of money. Basically the companies that could get gas were paying a lot for it. What is not shown here, was even if the prices hadn’t been set at $9,000/MWh (which is a scarcity pricing mechanism and a lot to go into) the power rices would still have been in the $1,500-$3,000 a MWh range just due to natural gas prices being in the $300-$600/mmBtu range (normally they are $2-$4/mmBtu, with anything above $10/mmBtu being extreme). You are right that everyone was trying to get as much power as they could onto the grid. There is a lot more going on behind all fo this as well. Last I checked something like 600MW of new BESS had come online within ERCOT since the blackout and a massive 36GW under study (most won't get built, although some of the recent legislation may backfire on republicans trying to support natgas and instead get a bunch of batteries built). The interesting thing in the peaker economics world right now is battery storage becoming cost competitive. People wanted a fix, the water company said easy 'll be $800m for backup generators and then came the resounding "hell no". I saw it here in San Antonio during the freeze when parts of the city lost water due to pump stations losing electricity. People love to say "we'd have gladly paid more" right after a disaster strikes, but their wallets and votes say the opposite. I mean ERCOT is specifically designed without a capacity market. The question is are consumers willing to pay more for 9 years just so their power isn’t disrupted in that 10th year for a single week, just so those plants are around? I’m skeptical. ERCOT publishes "Peaker Net Margin" for a quick-look into historical profitability of peakers and the feasibility of building new resources. Yes, there's significant calculus on whether to invest in any power plant. Interested in how the grid works?
